What are the 5 senses?

  1. The sense of smell

Your nose is used for more than just breathing in oxygen and breathing out carbon dioxide – it is also the organ you use to smell things and as an aide to the sense of taste. Your sense of smell can identify 7 different categories of odors -

    • Minty - Toothpaste
    • Musky – Dad’s aftershave
    • Floral – Flowers
    • Putrid – Bad breath
    • Pungent – Garlic
    • Ethereal – Fruits
    • Camphoraceous – Moth repellant
  1. The sense of taste

Your tongue contains taste buds that enable you to experience different flavors and identify the temperature and texture of the food you eat. It also lets you pick up combinations of flavors such as bittersweet, sweet-sour, etc. Your sense of taste can identify 4 main categories of flavors –

    • Sweet – Maple syrup
    • Sour – Lemon
    • Salty – Pretzels
    • Bitter – Unsweetened chocolate
  1. Sense of hearing

Your ears are responsible for the sense of hearing. Vibrations travels from the outer to the inner ear, are translated into sound and finally transmitted to the brain, which uses them to determine the direction and distance of the sounds.

  1. Sense of touch

Your skin and other body parts contain nerve endings that transmit messages to the brain as soon as you touch something. Your fingertips contain a larger amount of nerve endings and are therefore especially sensitive to the sense of touch. Your body can identify 4 kinds of touch sensations –

    • Hot - Fire
    • Cold - Ice
    • Pain - Pinching
    • Contact - Bumping into something
  1. Sense of sight

Your eyes send images to the brain which then creates 3-dimensional images that allow you to perceive depth. Your sense of sight is thus completely dependent on your eyes.
